What is a UX Writer?
A UX Writer is a subset of UX Designers. We collaborate with the product or design team (depending on the company’s hierarchy) to create great user experiences.
The obvious contribution is the in-product copy. But it’s more than words. We think in terms of user-centered information organization, message framing, contextual influences, natural language, delivery means, and nuanced formatting across an experience.
UX Writing is a craft of research-based creativity. Importantly what this means is its outcomes are measurable. As any other design process, iterative copy design and testing can home in on exactly how users think and how to deliver the right message in the best way in the best place at the best time.
What does this mean for you?
The goal of UX Writing is to keep the user moving forward (or backward, or around), which in turn can have significant impacts on an organization’s bottom line. Clear, concise, and useful (THE mantra of UX Writers everywhere) in-product copy contributes to smoother flows. Smoother flows can influence several key performance indicators (KPIs):
- Time-on-task
- Conversion rate
- Abandonment rate
- User retention rate
- Daily or monthly active user rate
- User error or success rate
- Customer satisfaction score (CSAT) or net promoter score (NPS)
- Number of support tickets (or number of escalations)
… to name just a few.
